Dr Schürmann is an adult and congenital Cardiac Surgeon affiliated to the Maboneng Heart & Lung Institute
at Netcare Sunninghill Hospital, Johannesburg. He obtained his MB ChB degree in 1998 from the University
of Pretoria whereafter he spent 5 years as a family practitioner in rural Canada. He returned to South Africa
where he obtained his MMed in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Pretoria in 2010 whereafter he
completed a Fellowship at the Walter Sisulu Paediatric Cardiac Surgery Unit at Netcare Sunninghill Hospital
under Prof. Rob Kinsley.
He also underwent a travelling Fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia with Dr Tomas Spray and
at Texas Children’s Heart Hospital with Dr Fraser in 2012.
The Maboneng Heart & Lung Institute is the largest congenital paediatric unit in Africa and performs a full
range of paediatric cardiac surgery which includes mechanical assist and ECMO.
