Akhter Goolam Mahomed
Currently, a Specialist Physician Pulmonologist Intensivist in Private Practice in Pretoria. Initially, he was a Consultant Physician, Division of Pulmonology and Critical Care, Department of Internal Medicine at Hillbrow and Johannesburg Hospitals and the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.
Prof Goolam Mahomed received the 1995 Allen and Hanburys, South African Pulmonology Society Research Fellowship Award. He spent time as a Research Fellow in the Department of Immunology, the University of Pretoria in 1996 and the Host Defence Unit, National Heart and Lung Institute, London, the United Kingdom in 1997.
He has been the Chief Specialist and Head of Intensive Care Unit, Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital, and Head and Associate Professor of Intensive Care, Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University from 2010-2015.
He has been National President of the Islamic Medical Association of South Africa and Chairman of the organising committee South African Thoracic Society Congress in 2013 and 2019. He was chairman of the Jacaranda branch of Critical Care Society of Southern Africa and chairman of the Gauteng region of the National Asthma Education Program (NAEP). He is an Elected Fellow of the College of Chest Physicians of North America (FCCP). He is Member of the Allergy Society of South Africa, the South African Society of Travel Medicine, the South African Medical Association, the American Thoracic Society and the European Respiratory Society.
He is an author of several papers and has won best paper awards for a number of them.
He was awarded the major MRC Ship Grant in 2013 for the Next-RCT Trial – A phase 3 Randomised control study of treatment of MDR-TB. He is the Principal investigator with Prof. Dheda on that trial.
